Over 40 athletes will compete.

The annual US Sumo Open is produced by the California Sumo Association for amateur sumo athletes, with a wide variety of contesters. Over 15 World Sumo Championships medalists have participated over the past few years. In addition to the international competition, the US Sumo Open often hosts renowned professional sumo stars, and to date, has brought five sumo greats to the competitions, as referees and announcers. In particular, three of these professional stars have been the three greatest Americans ever in pro sumo, a trio of Hawaiians – KONISHIKI (in 2001), AKEBONO (in 2003), and, MUSASHIMARU (in 2004). These legends in pro sumo have all shared their knowledge and love for sumo, and have helped sumo grow outside of Japan. For more details of past US Sumo Opens, see www.usasumo.com
